Lions Bay is a small, picturesque, seaside Village nestled on the eastern shore of British Columbia’s Howe Sound, the southernmost fjord of the northern hemisphere. The community’s name comes from the twin peaks visible all over the Lower Mainland and towering over the village, the Lions (or Ch’ich’iyuy Elxwikn, The Two Sisters, to the indigenous Coast Salish people).
A mostly residential community of 1,334 people, at 2.51 sq. kilometers the Village is the 12th smallest by land area of 162 municipalities in BC. Incorporated on January 2, 1971, the Village of Lions Bay is governed by a mayor and four councillors, and administered by 8 full-time and 5 part-time staff. The Municipality has an annual operating budget of approximately $3.3 mil. The average 2017 residential property assessment is $1,672,518, among the highest in BC. Lions Bay is 30 minutes from Vancouver to the south on the Sea-to-Sky Highway 99. To the north, Squamish is 30 minutes and Whistler about an hour away. Lions Bay is one of 23 municipalities, one Electoral Area and one first Nation that form the Metro Vancouver Regional District. With its own K-3 public primary school, it is part of BC School District No. 45.
